EP – Black Vinyl

Galway’s acclaimed DJ, label head and gig curator Shampain’s first full-length project was released on 14th November on his own imprint FREAKMAG. A sonic journey that blends techno, trance, experimental, and goth genres much like Shampain’s DJ sets.

The EP follows on from his debut mixtape Catching Up With Myself and is set across 12 months spent in Galways city centre. It explores the sounds and atmospheres of the town. Its structures, nature, surrounding suburbs and villages across the four seasons in the tumultuous seaside town. Contradiction is present throughout the EP, with themes of night and day, good versus evil, technology versus humans, and city versus nature all apparent from track to track. In that vein, the EP is split into two halves: Spring/Summer; Autumn/Winter. Contributions across the EP come from talented Irish musicians and fellow Galwegians Bethany, Julie Dawson (of Newdad fame) and Rachel Trench, while Corks Elaine Malone also adds some vocals to the final track Tearduct.

Spinning from ambient to intense, Millenium Madness is set to reflect the contradictions that run throughout G Town; the constant chaos and noisiness to total serenity within 5 minutes of each other – something akin to a Shampain DJ set. The cold rigidity of its infrastructure takes the form of drum machines, pedals, mixers, and synths, set against real, raw recordings taken from the River Corrib, pub smoking areas, walks to and from work, and many days of pouring rain.
