Released in December 1967, the Stones’ psychedelic detour often gets unfairly dismissed as a Sgt. Pepper’s imitation, but repeated listening reveals something stranger and more interesting than simple imitation. Jagger and Richards were writing under genuine legal pressure, with several band members facing drug charges throughout the sessions, and that tension bleeds into the album’s unsettled, fractured atmosphere in ways that pure studio experimentation never could.

Recorded at London’s legendary Olympic Studios during the time of the `Summer of Love,’ in a landscape of fervent creativity – including the likes of Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper’s, Hendrix, the Velvet Underground, and the Who – Satanic Majesties stands out as a dramatic landmark, now including the 2017 remastered audio on CD.
